Natural Appearing Eyelid Surgery in Beverly Hills

What is eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)?

Blepharoplasty, commonly referred to as eyelid surgery, is a cosmetic surgical procedure that aims to improve the appearance of the eyelids. It can be performed on the upper lids, lower lids, or both. The surgery can rejuvenate the area surrounding the eyes, making an individual look more rested and alert. It can address issues such as:

  • Sagging, droopy eyelids
  • puffiness, bags under the eyes
  • excess skin or wrinkles

How is eyelid surgery performed?

Before surgery, Dr. Lesavoy carefully makes the incisions with a surgical marking pen inside natural creases of the upper and lower eyelids.

During the eyelid surgery procedure, Dr. Lesavoy creates incisions based on the natural lines of your eyelids. This includes the creases of your upper lids or just below the lashes in the lower lids. The incisions can be extended to the crow’s feet or lines at the ends of the eyes. The skin will be separated from underlying fatty tissue and muscle, removing excess fat and trimming sagging skin and muscle. The incisions will be closed with fine sutures.

Blepharoplasty surgery takes approximately and hour or so to perform depending on the extent of the surgery, and can be performed under local anesthesia. If upper and lower eyelids are to be performed, the upper lids will be performed first followed by the lower ones.

Dr. Malcolm Lesavoy performs eyelid surgery using local anesthesia and some oral Valium sedation. (No IVs.) The procedure is done in our office certified surgery center, and you can go home the same day of surgery. You usually are presentable in public in approximately 10 days.

Will my eyes appear natural after having eyelid surgery?

The entire goal of eyelid surgery is to look refreshed and rejuvenate the areas around the eyes. By following the natural contour of your eyes with artistic placement of the incisions, the goal is to make your eyelid surgery result appear as natural appearing by not changing the shape of your eyes.

Am I a candidate for eyelid surgery?

Ideal candidates for eyelid surgery are patients in good health in need of rejuvenation of the upper and lower eyelids. The best candidates for eyelid surgery are patients that:

  • do not use nicotine products such as cigarettes, vaping or nicotine replacement products
  • Do not use NSAIDS 2 weeks prior to surgery
  • Have realistic expectations
  • Do not have an underlying medical condition that would disqualify them for eyelid surgery

Are eyelid surgery scars noticeable?

Dr. Lesavoy pays very particular attention to the incisions for eyelid surgery. As a board certified plastic surgeon who specializes in cosmetic facial surgery, placement of these incisions is key to a beautiful result by hiding them in natural creases so that they not only hide but heal nicely.

Does Eyelid Surgery Affect or interfere with Vision?

Eyelid surgery does not affect the vision. However, during the recovery period following surgery, swelling can cause temporary double vision. This will resolve as the swelling resolves. Upper eyelid surgery can actually improve vision in some patients who present with severe excess skin.

What is transconjunctival blepharoplasty?

Transconjunctival blepharoplasty uses a tiny incision made on the inside of the lower eyelid, removing fat without removing skin. The site can be closed using dissolvable sutures.

If pockets of fat are located beneath your lower eyelids and you do not need any skin removed, a transconjunctival blepharoplasty can be performed. With this procedure, an incision is made on the inside of the lower eyelid. Ideal patients for this procedure present with nice skin elasticity that do not need skin excision to tighten the lower eyelid. Through the transconjunctival incision, fat is then redistributed or removed, and sagging muscles are tightened.

Does lower eyelid surgery correct droopy and sagging eyes?

Lower blepharoplasty is a procedure where an incision is made just below the lower lash line. This allows for correction of lower eyelid conditions and removal of excess skin in the lower lid.

What is upper eyelid surgery?

Excessive skin of the upper eyelid can be corrected through eyelid surgery. An incision within the natural crease of the upper eyelid allows repositioning of fat deposits, tightening of muscles and tissue, and/or removal of excess skin to create a firmer upper eyelid contour.

What is the recovery from blepharoplasty surgery?

Recovery from blepharoplasty typically takes two weeks. Initially, there might be swelling, bruising, irritation, and dry eyes. It’s essential to follow post-operative care instructions, avoid strenuous activities, and use cold compresses to reduce swelling for the first 72 hours. Cold compresses should not be too heavy. Eyelid surgery is not a painful procedure with most blepharoplasty patients reporting minor pain following surgery and transition to Tylenol after a day or so following surgery. Patient are asked to recovery in a calm environment, away from nicotine use (including second-hand smoking and vaping).

  • Use Ice Compresses for the first 72 hours
  • Avoid First-hand and Second-hand nicotine exposure including vaping
  • Wear Sunglasses when stepping out of the house
  • Sleep elevated, not on your side
  • use hydrating eye drops to prevent dry eye
