Nose Job (Rhinoplasty) Q&A
What is rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty is the medical term for nose surgeries designed to address cosmetic or functional issues or both. When performed for cosmetic reasons, rhinoplasty can correct many issues including size, shape, and symmetry for a more pleasing facial balance that can have a dramatic effect not only on the nose but on the entire face.
What happens during a rhinoplasty procedure?
Rhinoplasty usually takes between one and two hours to complete. In more complex cases, especially where structural issues are also being corrected, the procedure can be longer. During the procedure, incisions are made to allow the skin to be separated from the underlying cartilage and bone. Once the bone and cartilage are exposed, they will be gently reshaped to achieve the desired end result. Once reshaping is complete, the skin is draped back over the nose and the incisions are closed. The incision location and suturing techniques are chosen to help make scars unnoticeable. Some surgeries can be performed using minimally-invasive approaches designed to place the incisions and sutures inside the nose, which means scars will be completely hidden from view.
What will the recovery process be like?
Once your procedure is over, a splint may be used outside the nose or inside the nostrils to help support the nose and ensure it maintains its new shape and position. Gauze and bandages may also be placed inside and around the nose to help reduce bleeding. Cold compresses and pain relievers can be used to reduce discomfort, and you’ll need to keep your head elevated, even while you sleep, to enable swelling to resolve as quickly as possible. Splints will be removed after about a week, and bruising and swelling usually resolve after about two weeks.
