Top Reasons Men Should Treat Gynecomastia

October 13, 2016

Gynecomastia is the name given to a surprisingly common condition in men – excess breast tissue. You may have also heard it referred to as “man boobs,” and heard friends and colleagues insensitively joke around about it.

However, for many sufferers, gynecomastia is no laughing matter. It can have a serious psychological effects, causing embarrassment, anxiety, and low self-esteem. Men with severe gynecomastia often find themselves avoiding certain situations, like swimming and wearing fitted shirts, so that they can keep their chests hidden.

Fortunately, breast reduction surgery for men is possible, and probably more common than you think. Dr. Malcolm Lesavoy in Beverly Hills, CA can help you treat gynecomastia, dramatically improving the appearance of your chest, while boosting your self-confidence and overall quality of life.

Causes of Excess Breast Tissue in Men

While the exact cause of excess breast tissue in men varies case by case, there are some factors that are believed to contribute to the condition.

Puberty and Excess Breast Tissue in Men

Gynecomastia can occur in puberty when hormone levels are quickly fluctuating. In most cases, these will level out at the end of puberty and the situation can resolve itself, but occasionally the patient will continue to suffer from gynecomastia into their adult life.

Hormones and Gynecomastia

Hormones can also play a part in later life. As men age, testosterone production slows. Weight gain is also common, which is linked to a rise in estrogen in the body. Getting older also means decreased collagen production, which causes skin to sag. When this happens in the chest, it can give the appearance of male breasts.

Medications and Gynecomastia

Some prescription medications have been known to cause excess male breast tissue. These include drugs that are used to treat fungal infections, heartburn, stomach ulcers, high blood pressure, and heart failure. If you are taking medication that causes gynecomastia, then your doctor may be able to suggest an alternative medication without such side effects.

Why choose gynecomastia treatment?

Many men with gynecomastia find themselves making changes to their lives as a result of their condition. Treatment means that you don’t have to compromise on the things that you enjoy doing, because you are uncomfortable or embarrassed. Men who have gynecomastia treatment report feeling more masculine, more confident and happier after treatment, with many also enjoying better relationships with the people they love.

Gynecomastia surgery procedure

Gynecomastia surgery is relatively straightforward and usually takes less than a couple of hours to complete. A general anesthetic is given, so you will not be in any pain during the procedure, and in most cases, you should be able to return home later that day.

During the surgery, a small incision is made to create an access space to remove excess fatty tissue. This is normally done using liposuction. However, if there is a large amount of tissue to be removed, it may be necessary for Dr. Lesavoy to make additional incisions to access each pocket of fatty tissue. The incisions will be closed using sutures, and bandages will be fitted across your chest to keep the incision site clean, support your chest, and control the swelling.

Depending on how much tissue has been removed, it may be necessary to reposition the nipple, so that it sits higher on the chest, making the chest appear tighter and more youthful.

Recovery from gynecomastia surgery

Recovery from gynecomastia surgery is relatively straightforward. You can expect to be in some discomfort for a number of days following your procedure, but you will be given drugs to help minimize your pain. Your chest will also be swollen and bruised, and this can last for a few weeks after your surgery.

To aid healing, you will be given a support garment to wear, and this should be used for up to six weeks after surgery to help with swelling. Dr. Lesavoy will give you specific advice after your surgery, which should be followed to give you the best possible results from your male breast reduction procedure.

Don’t let excess breast tissue hold you back from enjoying life. With gynecomastia treatment, you can achieve an attractive, masculine chest and feel confident going shirtless in the California sun. Call Lesavoy Plastic Surgery today at 310-248-5451 to schedule an appointment to treat gynecomastia.
